Montserrat
Montserrat is perched on a striking rocky massif, renowned for its unique natural formations. The entire area is a protected natural park, preserving its extraordinary landscape. Home to the Benedictine monks, the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey was founded in the 11th century and later rebuilt between the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, it remains an active monastery with over 70 monks.
Reaching Montserrat by taxi takes about an hour—30 minutes on the highway followed by another 30 along winding mountain roads that lead up to the Abbey. The Basilica de Montserrat houses the revered Virgin of Montserrat, affectionately known as “La Moreneta” due to her dark complexion. This iconic statue is a profound religious symbol for Catalonia.
Beside the Basilica, visitors can explore a magnificent museum, sample local delicacies, and—if space permits—enjoy a performance by the Escolanía, Montserrat’s world-famous boys’ choir. The choir members receive exceptional musical training and perform Monday through Friday at 1:00 PM, offering a truly unforgettable experience.
